Andy Townsend drools over Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield in loss v Liverpool

Andy Townsend was full of praise for Scott Arfield who scored the opening goal for Rangers against Liverpool in the Champions League clash at Ibrox on Wednesday (12 October) night.

The Gers suffered their heaviest-ever defeat in Europe and it’s definitely the first time they have conceded seven at Ibrox as they lost 7-1 against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

It absolutely beggars belief how such a promising night has turned into annihilation. Regardless of the opponent and the gulf in quality, this is beyond acceptable.

“Fabulous strike. A wry grin from Jurgen Klopp wondering how on earth that happened. Outstanding goal,” said Townsend while commentating on the game for Champions League World Feed.

Shocking

At the break, when the scoreline was still 1-1, there was still a lot of fight left for the Gers.

But after Roberto Firmino got the second goal, it felt like the home team simply gave up. This is where leadership comes into play, and James Tavernier, who was a poor game, failed horribly.

Instead of taking the game to the wire by staying compact at the back, Rangers were brutally exposed and goals started to pour.

It needed Mohamed Salah just six minutes to wrap up his hat-trick while the likes of Barisic and others simply stood still. There are no tackles, and no attempts to stop him. They just stood still and conceded.

Rangers

When you’re competing at this level, and especially after putting in a solid performance at the break, this dramatic collapse is simply unacceptable.

Where will Rangers go after this? This will go down in history as one of the worst performances ever, and the club collectively must take the blame.

With this defeat, their hopes in this competition are crushed into pieces, and now they can hope for some miracle to secure a position in the Europa League.

In other Rangers news, there’s been yet another high-profile exit from behind the scenes at Ibrox.
