Ally McCoist and Alan Brazil react to state of Scottish football after Rangers Champions League defeat v Liverpool

Ally McCoist feels Scottish football is “absolutely miles” behind the Premier League in terms of quality after Rangers were thrashed 7-1 by Liverpool.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side folded in the latter stages of the game, with Mohamed Salah scoring a record-breaking six-minute hat trick.

Brazil and McCoist both felt the result was a wake-up call as to how far behind Scottish football is compared to the Premier League and the best teams in Europe.

Talking on talkSPORT Breakfast (06:20, 13 October) Brazil said: “Look at Liverpool’s bench! How far behind are the SPFL?”

McCoist replied: “Alan, they are miles behind mate, absolutely miles behind. Klopp’s substitutions were Salah, Thiago and Robertson, which tells you all you need to know.

“Goldson going off was a big blow and Rangers bring on an 18-year-old kid to replace him.”

Realisation

This should be a big eye-opener for those who feel Rangers and Celtic can compete with Premier League and European clubs in their current state. The domestic state of Scottish football is so far behind England and the majority of Europe. Liverpool have been in indifferent form in the 2022/23 season yet still managed to dispatch Rangers with ease on Wednesday evening (12 October).

Something needs to be done to rectify the standard of football in Scotland, and having a two-team league could well be impacting the state of the domestic game.

The TV deals in Scotland are minuscule compared to the Premier League and that’s essentially because there are only a handful of games that fans from other parts of the world want to watch.

The Old Firm fixtures and games involving Rangers and Celtic. That’s it. Why would TV companies look to hand out a huge broadcasting deal for a small number of games compared to the Premier League? A more competitive and interesting Premiership could be the answer to rectify the sub-par standard.

In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton and Stan Collymore reacted to the result on Twitter on Wednesday night.
