Steven Thompson accuses Rangers of giving up in Liverpool defeat – ‘Thrown the towel in’

Rangers suffered an embarrassing 7-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday – Steven Thompson believes his former side gave up.

Rangers opened the scoring at Ibrox through Scott Arfield, but that was quickly forgotten about as Jurgen Klopp’s side ran rampant at Ibrox.

Roberto Firmino scored the first two for the Reds and then Darwin Nunez netted shortly before Mohamed Salah’s six-minute hattrick. Harvey Elliott rounded off the heavy defeat late on.

With qualification still up for grabs, it was a hugely disappointing performance from Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men, and former Gers striker Thompson didn’t hold back.

Following the sixth Liverpool goal, Thompson told BBC Sportsound: “It’s all too easy. Rangers have thrown the towel in.

“There’s only one thing on Salah’s mind, and it is executed to absolute perfection.”

Embarrassing

No Rangers fan expected their side to walk over Liverpool at Ibrox, but the least expected was for the players to fight for the badge and put in 100 per cent effort.

They fell far, far short of those expectations, and downed tools when the going got tough. A strong start was thrown away through a lapse of concentration from captain James Tavernier, and confidence should’ve been high heading into the break level.

But more and more mistakes started to creep in, and the energy levels at Ibrox dropped as a result. The minute Firmino and Nunez made it 3-1, all players seemed to give up, and Thompson is right to slate them for their performance.

After such a buzz going into the Champions League this season, it’s hard not to feel disappointed at the end result, with Van Bronckhorst’s side failing to pick up a single point in the first four games.

Focus now has to switch back to the Premiership and Sunday’s trip to Motherwell. A reaction is needed.
