Rio Ferdinand reacts to Rangers team news v Liverpool live on BT Sport, delivers Fashion Sakala verdict

Rio Ferdinand is pleased to see Fashion Sakala get a start for Rangers when they take on Liverpool at Ibrox on Wednesday night.

Sakala, 25, has been named in Giovanni van Brockhorst’s starting line-up for just the third time this season.

He’ll feature on the right-wing against Liverpool and Ferdinand feels he could provide the Gers with an outlet for their fourth Champions League group stage tie of the season.

“They’ve got to be brave. Get behind the ball and make runs beyond the forward as well,” said Ferdinand on BT Sport 2 prior to kick off on Wednesday night (12 October, 07:00pm).

“Far too often they didn’t do that [at Anfield]. They didn’t catch up with play, there were far too many bodies forward.

“I think Sakala will give them some legs and he’s somebody with a bit of explosiveness.

“They want to get up and around the strikers because if you don’t do that in this type of game, [Virgil] van Dijk and the guys at the back will sit there with cigars and chill out like they did at Anfield.”

Huge game

It’s a good shout by Ferdinand.

Sakala hasn’t played much at all this season, completing just 225 minutes so far this season across all competitions.

He’s scored one and supplied one assist in six total appearances this term for the Light Blues so he hasn’t exactly been in amazing form – nor had the chance.

But this is a big opportunity for Sakala. He’s starting against a team that’s recently won the Champions League and the Premier League.

The Zambia international has had a rather disappointing time at Ibrox so far.

He’s been a victim of van Brockhorst’s team selections really because we still don’t know whether he feels more comfortable on the wing or up front.

Rangers don’t have a proper right-winger – somehow – but Sakala is the man under the microscope in that area of the pitch on Wednesday night.

Let’s hope he can light it up against a defence that keeps on conceding.

In other Rangers news, there’s been yet another high-profile exit from behind the scenes at Ibrox.
