Jason Cundy blasts Celtic ’embarrassment’ as he hopes for Rangers to win against Liverpool in Champions League

Jason Cundy has questioned what’s happening to Scottish teams in the Champions League this season with Rangers close to joining Celtic in being dumped out of the competition.

If Rangers lose to Liverpool on Wednesday night (12 October) at Ibrox, they’ll join Celtic in dropping out of the competition while a potential spot in the Europa League knock-out stages may also be at risk.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men have zero goals and zero points from their first three games but Cundy is hoping that a clash at Ibrox against struggling Liverpool could yield a positive result for the Light Blues.

Rangers

Speaking on talkSPORT on Tuesday night (11 October, 10:21pm) after Celtic’s defeat, as shown on YouTube, Cundy said: “If Rangers don’t win that, what’s going on with Scottish football in the Champions League?

“Celtic, they really are an embarrassment.

“They step up and they give it the big ‘un about being in there naturally. It’s not harsh, they must be embarrassed themselves, Celtic fans.

The former Chelsea player added: “I hope Rangers beat Liverpool, I do, to prove me wrong. Rangers did brilliantly last year in the Europa League.”

High expectations

Liverpool aren’t doing well right now in the Premier League.

They’ve also had a bit of a rough ride in the Champions League too this season with far tougher games to be played this season than they’ve already had.

But to expect Rangers to beat them at Ibrox is a tad too much.

We’ve not had a great season ourselves after a poor summer transfer window.

Liverpool are surely just too good for us though, even with a second-string squad or a squad that’s well out of form.

Van Bronckhorst’s job won’t hinge on this game, nor will Rangers’ season.

We’ve been handed a tough group against Liverpool, Napoli and Ajax. But the same cannot be said about Celtic, who have yet again proven to be Scotland’s shame in European football.

If they’re not hanging up anti-monarchy banners off the pitch, they’re dreadful on it and have been knocked out of the Champions League in a group containing Shakhtar Donetsk and RB Leipzig.

Their continual failure would be funnier if it wasn’t so damaging to our game.

In other Rangers news, yet another behind-the-scenes exit from Ibrox has been confirmed as a senior man walks out.
