Giovanni van Bronckhorst right to demand more from Rangers winger Ryan Kent – Barry Ferguson

Barry Ferguson has backed Giovanni van Bronckhorst for demanding more from Rangers wingers Ryan Kent.

The Dutch manager, while talking to the media ahead of the fixture against St. Mirren on Saturday, 08 October, stated that the winger must be more consistent to keep his place in the team.

“I think Ryan is an exceptional player with a lot of qualities but his qualities haven’t been there every game,” he said. “You just need to be consistent and make sure he gives them the best positions on the pitch. To be dangerous to either have an assist or to score.”

Ferguson, while talking to Go Radio as quoted by Daily Record, agreed with Van Bronckhorst and stated that the 25-year-old must start delivering.

“Ryan Kent’s a player that I think a lot of,” he said. “He’s got a lot of ability but I need to see it on a more consistent basis, in terms of scoring goals and creating goals.

“He did it last week against Hearts at Tynecastle. A great ball in for Colak and obviously he scored the fourth goal. But I need to see that more.

“The manager’s right to ask for more. If you ask a lot of Rangers supporters, they would want more.

“I’ve said it for a number of weeks now – I’ve been greedy about it. He’s a player I rate highly but I need to see it week in, week out.”

Time running out

Rangers started the season knowing that some of the big names will leave the club come to the end of the summer transfer window.

That happened as notable names did depart but few players who were expected to leave ended up staying and one of them was Kent.

The former England under-20 international is in the final year of his contract and as things stand, he will be allowed to negotiate with foreign clubs in January 2023 to sign a pre-contract.

However, his performances this season have been below-par and that would not be enough to attract a lot of suitors who would be hesitant to sign a player who is not performing consistently.

Therefore, the time is running out for the former Liverpool winger and he must start delivering for the Gers, sooner rather than later.

In the ongoing campaign, Kent, who is a Rangers player since the summer of 2019 when he moved in a deal worth £6.48 million, has represented his current side in 12 matches across all competitions where he has managed to score once and provided four assists [Transfermarkt].
