Jurgen Klopp: There is no gulf of class between Liverpool and Rangers after Champions League showdown

Liverpool earned themselves a 2-0 win over Rangers on Tuesday night, but Jurgen Klopp doesn’t see too much difference between the quality of both sides.

Rangers suffered a third consecutive European defeat at Anfield, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah scoring for the Reds.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side struggled to have much impact, but Klopp believes that his opponents on Tuesday aren’t far from matching the quality of his side.

When asked if there was a gulf of class between the sides, Klopp replied: “No. I don’t recognise that,” as quoted by the Daily Record.

“Rangers is a really good team doing really well who had an exceptional season in Europe last season and were unlucky when they lost the final. They then qualified for the Champions League.

“It is all possible. You can’t have it all in one. You have to have time to adapt in Europe. I am not sure if this is the wrong press conference to say the word Celtic. But both of these clubs made a big step in the last few years.”

Age-old question

Klopp didn’t exactly answer whether Rangers would be able to compete in English football, but he did pay Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side a huge compliment.

Gers definitely have made huge improvements over the last few seasons, and the Europa League run last season proved the club’s continental credit.

Unfortunately, it seems that the step up to Champions League football was slightly too early, but Klopp clearly agrees that it’s where Rangers belong.

Sadly, Gers weren’t able to trouble Liverpool at all on Tuesday, with the side just unable to carve out opportunities on the break.

But with the return leg to Ibrox just a week away, hopefully Van Bronckhorst can prove Klopp right and show Rangers’ true potential.

There are more than just points at stake, and Rangers will want to prove they can compete with the very best in Europe.
