Steven Thompson backs Antonio Colak to start over Alfredo Morelos for Rangers v Liverpool
Steven Thompson wants to see Antonio Colak given the nod from the start ahead of Alfredo Morelos for Rangers showdown with Liverpool tonight.
The Croatian scored twice at the weekend in the 4-0 win over Hearts to take his season tally to 11, but Morelos came off the bench to replace him and got on the scoresheet too to give Giovanni Van Bronckhorst a selection headache.
But Thompson, who played for Rangers between 2003-2006, told the BBC that because of his recent form and question marks around Morelos’ fitness that it should be the summer arrival who starts the game.
“If I was Colak and I was left out of the side having scored the goals I’ve scored, back-to-back doubles, obviously at the weekend getting two as well, Morelos came on and scored. He’s not been starting games.
“What is his fitness level right now?
“I think a fully fit Morelos would get my vote, but in Colak’s form that he’s in, he’ll be confident and looking at the chances that he has scored this season, he hasn’t missed many.
“His chance conversion rate is very, very high so I think it will be Colak, purely because of the goals he’s been scoring but I do think Morelos will feature at some stage.”
Hard to argue
Colak was a bit of a saga in the summer for a relatively minuscule transfer fee, but he has proven to be worth every penny already just a few months in.
The 29-year-old has hit 11 goals including in the Champions League against PSV Eindhoven and his recent form has meant that he absolutely must start this game.
Morelos if fully fit would arguably be a better fit for the task with his constant movement and relentless pressing, but he hasn’t started a game yet this season and there are question marks around if he could survive the full game.
It may be a better option to bring him on later against more tired defenders when the game is a little more stretched, while Colak’s physicality and poaching instinct could be exactly what’s needed in the tight encounter.
It’s expected that the Croatian will get the nod so Thompson should be delighted, and fingers crossed the result goes our way too.
