Ally McCoist praises ‘terrific’ Allan McGregor for performance in Rangers defeat v Liverpool

Ally McCoist has blasted Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s decision to drop Allan McGregor earlier this season and praised the keeper for his display for Rangers against Liverpool.

The 40 year old was named as the starting goalkeeper for the Champions League defeat at Anfield, but turned in a brilliant first-half display to keep the score at just 1-0 at the break.

And while speaking on BT Sport [4 October, 8:55pm] during the half-time break McCoist labelled Van Bronckhorst’s decision to drop the veteran earlier in the season as “bizarre”, claiming he has always been the best goalkeeper at the club.

“He’s been terrific,” he said. “I was talking to the boys before the game. He lost his place for some bizarre reason because in my opinion he’s always been the best goalkeeper at the football club.

“You can see he’s got a vast experience. He comes out and narrows the angle and gets a little bit of luck there, but I don’t think anyone would begrudge him because he’s certainly earned it.

“They’ve been good save, as you say three or four of them have been excellent saves and he has kept Rangers probably single-handedly in this game at this moment in time.”

Poor

We’ve all known all season, but this type of performance has solidified what a poor decision it was from Van Bronckhorst to drop McGregor to begin with.

McLaughlin isn’t a bad goalkeeper by any stretch, and while he made a few errors this season it’s understandable why the manager wanted to back him after making the initial call.

But McGregor, despite his age, is just levels above and it does leave you with a bit of a “what if?” feeling surrounding some of the poorer results this season.

McCoist is spot on to call the manager out for his decision, but also to ensure that the former Scotland international gets his due praise for his performance in tonight’s game despite another defeat, because he was nothing short of brilliant.

He could do nothing about the goals and made some stunning saves during the game, and Rangers fans are sure now if they weren’t before that we always have a better chance of a result with him between the sticks.
