Rangers face selection dilemma with up to nine players likely to miss Liverpool fixture

Rangers could be without up to nine players for their UEFA Champions League fixture against Liverpool, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The Gers are still in a hunt to secure their first point in Europe’s elite club competition and now they will travel to Anfield to face the Reds on Tuesday.

Four long-term absentees in John Souttar, Filip Helander, Ianis Hagi, Nnamdi Ofoborh are certain to not take part in the fixture whereas four other players — Jon McLaughlin, Tom Lawrence, Alex Lowry and Kemar Roofe — are still “touch-and-go” because of fitness concerns.

That’s not it as defender James Sands will also miss the fixture after receiving a red card in the last outing of the group against Napoli at Ibrox.

Big chance

Rangers entered the Champions League knowing that they have very little chance of progressing to the next stage after being placed in an extremely tricky group alongside three very decent teams.

That has proved to be the case as the Gers suffered two heavy defeats against Ajax and Napoli which left them at the bottom of Group A with no points next to their name.

However, as weird as it may sound, it seems like the Scottish side have a slight chance of causing an upset against last season’s finalist Liverpool in their upcoming fixture.

The Reds are struggling in the ongoing campaign and had another poor result at the weekend where they were held for a 3-3 draw at home by Brighton.

The fans will be hoping that manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be able to find a way to make his players produce a much better performance than they did in their earlier matches in the competition against a side that is clearly lacking confidence.
