Sky Sports pundit calls Cammy Devlin a ‘coward’ after outrage in Rangers win at Hearts

John Robertson accused Cammy Devlin of making a “coward’s tackle” for the challenge on Rabbi Matondo that got him sent off against Rangers.

The Australian midfielder was shown a straight red by Steven McClean in the 39th-minute after he needlessly stamped on the Gers Welsh winger, who was shielding the ball from another Hearts player near the touchline.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst was outraged and the referee was left with no choice but to produce the card on Saturday (1 October), with the Light Blues never in danger of losing their 2-0 lead from then on and eventually winning 4-0.

Speaking at half-time live on Sky Sports (1.25pm) the former Jam Tarts player said: “It’s stupid, it’s terrible and there is absolutely no need for it.

“I don’t know what Cammy Devlin is thinking, he’s got a bit of a reputation for being a bit of a hard man but it’s a bit of a coward’s tackle.”

There was no justification for the challenge and there was only going to be one outcome when Devlin steamed in on Matondo who wasn’t even going anywhere.

Rangers have a good record at Tynecastle and with Antonio Colak netting twice in the first half it was clearly heading in the same direction again.

Devlin took his frustration out on an opponent and was duly sent marching for doing so, which only confirmed how the result would finish.

Croatia international Colak’s scoring record since his arrival in Glasgow has been very impressive, so it was little surprise that he was key to a vital win.

But the late strikes for Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent could prove to be more important in the long run, with both needing to find some form to generate a title challenge and threaten some better results in Europe.

Going top of the table for a couple of hours at least, with a comfortable victory, was the perfect return to action after the international break, and van Bronckhorst will want plenty more of the same.

In other Rangers news, Ally McCoist was exasperated by the referee for a “terrible decision” in the win at Hearts.
