Rangers: Charlie McCann idolises ‘perfect’ Steven Davis at Auchenhowie

Charlie McCann recently made his first start for Rangers against Dundee United and he is relishing the challenge he is getting at Ibrox.

The 19-year-old made further appearances for Northern Ireland Under-21s this week but he is aiming higher than the youth sides with Light Blues teammate Steven Davis in the senior setup.

He is understandably targeting that promotion to Ian Baraclough’s squad but he wants to learn as much as he can from Davis at Auchenhowie first.

Rangers

“It’s maybe a bit of cliché or an obvious thing to say, but Steven Davis is my role model at Rangers,” McCann said to the Belfast Telegraph.

“We’ve a lot in common, as we play for the same club and the same country but he’s also a very similar player to me in terms of style. So, I tried to watch him in training and learn as much as I can from him.

“He’s the perfect player to look up to and to learn from as he looks after himself and does things the right way.

“All the senior lads help me every day, but I think Davo is the main one as he plays the game the way I want to play the game. He gives me a lot of pointers and advice, so I’m grateful to him.”

Successor

McCann’s first start for the Gers was a very good opening display in front of a packed Ibrox crowd and that will have given him plenty of confidence going into the next month of games.

Rangers

Davis might have to be the one who misses out on plenty of games if the teenager keeps performing as he has been and fellow youngster Alex Lowry is on his way back to fitness to make matters worse for the veteran.

But he still has a big role to play at the club this season in wielding his decades of wisdom and dropping it on the stars of tomorrow that are emerging every day at Auchenhowie.

Lowry and McCann are just two of the sensational young talents that are contracted to Rangers and with the experience of Davis and others such as Connor Goldson to harness, they will only improve.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst could soon have a lot of very good and eager young players giving him selection headaches if his senior stars continue to underperform.

In other Rangers news, contract talks could start very soon for this Ibrox starlet who has emerged as a superb player this season.
