Andy Walker suprised by lack of Dutch players in Rangers squad

Andy Walker has been left surprised by the lack of Dutch players at Rangers under Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

There have been some criticisms over the summer recruitment and Walker, who works for Sky Sports, is taken aback that the present squad doesn’t have any Dutch involvement.

The Dutch league is a fine catchment area, but Giovanni van Bronckhorst hasn’t signed any players from his homeland.

“I’m just surprised there’s no Dutch involvement in the 25-man squad he’s got. It is a surprise a Dutch manager hasn’t got a Dutch player,” Walker said on Go Radio (22 September).

“You would think he would know someone. I remember doing a Scotland U21s game years ago and John Park was there (as a scout) for Celtic.

“Virgil Van Dijk was playing for Holland and not so long after that he was playing for Celtic. Quincy Promes was also playing I think and he moved to Spartak Moscow.

“I just think a Dutch manager who has played at the highest level, knowing all the coaches… you would think he would be able to spot someone who would come over and make a difference.”

The Rangers hierarchy has come under scrutiny after a stuttering start to the season.

The Bears lost three games in a row in September including a 4-0 defeat against Celtic, and there were even suggestions that Van Bronckhorst’s position is under threat.

However, despite Celtic’s impressive start, they only lead by two points.

The Dutchman has done an incredible job so far, but there are question marks over his recruitment.

Antonio Colak has been a hit for the Gers, while Tom Lawrence was doing well before he picked up an injury.

The likes of Ben Davies, John Souttar, Ridvan Yilmaz and Rabbi Matondo have underperformed and are struggling for minutes while Malik Tillman has been inconsistent.

Managers often bring players from their own country that should be their key knowledgeable area.

But it doesn’t always work like that. Having said that, it’s really strange that the Dutchman hasn’t made enough attempts to explore the Dutch league.

In other Rangers news, this senior man is set to quit his job at Ibrox.
