Kenny Miller surprised as Charlie McCann and Leon King started for Rangers v Dundee United
Kenny Miller admits he didn’t expect Charlie McCann and Leon King will start for Rangers as they won 2-1 against Dundee United in the Scottish Premiership clash on Saturday (17 September).
Giovanni van Bronckhorst made some changes to the side as the Bears needed a response following three defeats in a row.
Antonio Colak scored twice to earn the Gers all three points. Miller has praised McCann heavily, saying he is an “intelligent” player.
“They’re good players, there’s no doubt about it. Did I expect to see it? No I didn’t, to be honest,” said Miller on Go Football Show (20 September).
“Not when you have put that investment in to the backline but I think it shows how much Giovanni trusts them. They’re obviously doing their best in training every day, showing up and have earned their slot because he wouldn’t have handed it to them if he felt they didn’t deserve it.
“McCann I have seen for a few years now and he’s a very, very good player. I think you saw it in spells with a few chances, he was one of the players in the second half that had really good opportunities in particular, in the same areas Kent and Arfield pick up but he completely missed it. But he’s a really good technical player, really intelligent footballer. It was great to see him get a game and even more pleasing is those players came in and won. They got on very well, both of them.”
After three defeats in a row, the Gers needed to do something different. They needed to return to winning ways and the pressure was mounting on the Dutchman.
The performance against Dundee Utd was far from convincing but the Bears managed to pick up all three points.
The Dutchman dropped Alfredo Morelos from the starting line-up, and Colak repaid the faith by scoring twice.
However, the performances of the young duo – McCann and King – are noteworthy too.
King has been around the senior squad for a while, and he has always impressed whenever he has taken the field.
Miller is absolutely spot on here. Van Bronckhorst must be pleased with their efforts in training, and as a result, he has trusted them to deliver.
McCann is also a fantastic young talent, and Miller has rightly praised him heavily. These two have got great potential, and it’s important for Rangers they continue their development at the right pace.
