BBC Sportsound pundit piles praise on Allan McGregor despite Rangers defeat v Napoli

Allan McGregor was outstanding on his return against Napoli, and the veteran goalkeeper drew praise from former Rangers winger Neil McCann.

On his return to the starting lineup, McGregor delivered some superb saves during Rangers’ 3-0 Champions League defeat to Napoli.

McGregor had only made one appearance for the Gers this season prior to his start on Wednesday night, but the 40-year-old showed no signs of rust against the Serie A side.

Napoli eventually found their way past the Scot with a second-half penalty, but McGregor was still littered with praise for his heroic showing.

Former Rangers winger McCann was among McGregor’s admirers and was full of praise on BBC Sportsound.

“Take a bow, Allan McGregor!” said the BBC Scotland pundit.

“If they didn’t love him already, they do now.”

A heroic return

As said by McCann – McGregor is a loved figure in the blue half of Glasgow and he showed exactly why on Wednesday night with a masterful display.

After consecutive 4-0 drubbings to Ajax and Celtic in recent weeks, the clash against Napoli was extremely important for Rangers as they looked to keep their Champions League campaign on track.

McGregor wasn’t able to keep the Serie A leaders out as they piled pressure on his goal, but he put up a stubborn resistance to help his side go toe-to-toe with the Italian outfit.

Has he warranted a permanent return to the starting lineup? It’s hard to argue against it.

Despite his age, McGregor still has what it takes to perform for Rangers and he hardly put a foot wrong against Napoli.

McGregor’s leadership and experience at the back could go a long way to helping Rangers get their form back on track.
