Ewan Murray: Giovanni van Bronckhorst right to be annoyed at questions over Rangers style of play
Guardian ournalist Ewan Murray believes Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst was right to be annoyed after questions were raised over his style of play.
Van Bronckhorst responded passionately to a question suggesting that he should change philosophy during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday 3 September (Sky Sports).
However, Murray feels that he was well within his right to stand up for his principles and suggested that the players have to take some responsibility for the poor results of late.
Murray said (via his Twitter account, 13 September): “You don’t often see Giovanni van Bronckhorst ticked off but he didn’t like today’s suggestion he should alter philosophy.
“He has a point.. little managers can do when players don’t track runners, stand still at opposition throw-ins/free kicks etc.”
Player have to step up
The most important thing at any football club is consistency from the boardroom right down to the players in terms of the way staff are recruited and how that is going to be implemented on the pitch.
Trusting a manager and giving him time is one of the main aspects that can bring long-term success to a club and sticking with Giovanni van Bronckhorst and supporting his way of playing football is a must for the Ibrox boardroom.
It was only a matter of weeks ago that Rangers put in an excellent display against PSV to secure their place in the Champions League group stage.

The players haven’t suddenly diverged away from his way of playing or don’t believe in it, they have just not turned up and done the basics in their last two matches against far superior opposition.
Van Bronckhorst is not free from blame as it’s up to him to rejuvenate the players and ensure that they rediscover the levels that they have performed to in the past.
It is crucial that the Rangers boss sticks to his philosophy and doesn’t change how his side plays. At Ibrox, Rangers have been dominant and there’s no reason why they can’t make life difficult for Napoli on Wednesday evening (14 September).
