Ally McCoist loses mind over 'rubbish' IFAB law as Rangers suffer injustice v Napoli
Ally McCoist was furious as Napoli were handed a second chance to score a penalty against Rangers after Matteo Politano encroached in the box before scoring.
Allan McGregor saved Piotr Zielinski’s spot-kick in the second half but his save only found Politano, who scored from the rebound.
VAR showed that Politano was already in the box before the penalty was taken and referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz was forced to make Napoli re-take it.
McGregor saved Zielinski’s penalty again but McCoist was furious with IFAB’s law that the penalty should be retaken even if the encroachment was made by an attacking player.
“I have to tell you, that rule is totally wrong,” said McCoist on BT Sport 4 (14 September, 09:18pm).
“That rule is absolutely, totally wrong. How can Allan McGregor possibly be penalised for Politano. It’s absolute rubbish, that’s what it is. It’s rubbish, that rule.”

Utterly ridiculous
It’s crazy, isn’t it?
McGregor did nothing wrong, Politano did.
Yet Napoli got a second stab at the penalty based on something one of their own players did.
McGregor saved the penalty yet had to suffer facing another spot-kick.
Fortunately, the 40-year-old goalie saved the retaken penalty and managed to parry it even further away from goal so there was no chance of a rebound being scored against him.
Unfortunately, Borna Barisic’s handball handed Napoli another spot-kick not long later and Politano, this time, scored and the goal stood even though McGregor was close to stopping it.
IFAB need to look into that law of the game because it’s unfair and hands the advantage to the team that’s committed the offence.
It should be a free-kick to the defending team if that happens again.
There have been some pointless law changes in football in recent years yet this one would make a lot of sense.
