Rangers youngster Alex Lowry on the road to recovery after horror tackle

Rangers teenager Alex Lowry seems “positive” currently as he continues his recovery from the horror tackle that ruled him out for up to six weeks, says David McCallum.

The B Team boss watched as the 19-year-old winger was hacked down late in the 7-0 win over Dumbarton on 23 August before being stretchered off, raising fears that he might be out long-term.

But after it was revealed the absence was likely to be between a month and six weeks it appears that the young star has been in a positive frame of mind in light of the news that the damage wasn’t as bad as first feared.

Speaking on Monday (12 September) via the Glasgow Times, he McCallum said: “He is progressing well. He is obviously not back on the football pitch yet and not back in contention for any game time at the moment.

“But any time I have seen him or had conversations about him, it seems to be quite positive just now.

“I think when he got the initial feedback that the injury wasn’t going to be as long-term as what we initially thought, I think naturally Alex felt a bit better about that because he could see a bit of brightness ahead.”

Return

It’s very positive news that Lowry seems positive personally since it is often the psychological aspect of a bad injury that is more lasting than the physical.

After bursting onto the scene early last season there was not as much seen of the talented attacker in first team action as might have been hoped.

That situation has continued into the new campaign amid a number of arrivals at attacking positions, but as Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Rangers side have hit the first crisis of the season he is likely to need to reshuffle.

That Lowry is currently ruled out robs him of the opportunity to have a say in that, but surely once he is back to full fitness he has to be in with a shout at first team involvement.

With senior stars such as Ryan Kent badly off form at the moment and a feeling that the club are short in natural wide men the homegrown star seems destined to be an answer.

Perhaps he should never have been in the position for Ally Love to take his frustrations out on him in the B Team match in the first place, as for all it is wise to carefully manage a young talent’s transition into the senior set up Lowry has looked at home when ever he has featured.

In other Rangers news, the club could now see two senior stars leave for very little in January after what they’ve done over the past three weeks.
