Kevin Thomson blasts James Tavernier and Connor Goldson during Rangers defeat to Ajax

Kevin Thomson blasted Rangers duo James Tavernier and Connor Goldson for not taking responsibility for the opening goal against Ajax.

The Gers were thumped for a second game in succession as they found themselves 3-0 down at half-time once again, with goals from Edson Alvarez, Steven Berghuis and Mohammed Kudus.

But after Alvarez was allowed a free header in the box for the opener, BT Sport co-commentator Thomson said it was “poor” and called out the senior duo for their part in the defensive shambles.

“I know any goal you can look back on and think it’s poor, but he just ghosts in again,” he said.

“So many blue jerseys, no-one really taking responsibility. James Tavernier, Connor Goldson caught under the ball. It’s a sore one, but it’s been coming. They’ve been knocking on the door.

“Great header from Alvarez. Not sure there’s much McLaughlin could do about it.”

Poor

Rangers have really struggled from set plays since Giovanni van Bronckhorst took over and it’s now become a clear weakness for teams to attack.

The team had six players along the six yard box for the goal and yet none of them jumped and Alvarez found himself above everyone with a free header to break the deadlock.

It’s simply not good enough and there comes a point in time where the senior players on the pitch must take responsibility and organise the team better, otherwise they become partially to blame.

That’s the case here, with Tavernier not jumping and Goldson not in a position to challenge for the ball in a crowded box because of his starting position.

Rangers need to see major changes in the coming games because the boss is under big pressure now and fans are starting to get disgruntled by it all.
