Jonny McFarlane shares why Rabbi Matondo missed Rangers 4-0 defeat v Celtic

Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo wasn’t selected to play against Celtic because he was ill, according to journalist Jonny McFarlane.

The Wales winger was a surprise omission from the squad that suffered a heavy defeat against Celtic at Parkhead on Saturday afternoon.

Some believed it could be an injury and others believed he had just been left out by the manager after failing to shine since signing fro Schalke in the summer, but Ranger Review journalist McFarlane shared on his personal Twitter account what he had been told.

“Just to clear up a selection question regarding Saturday’s game, I know there was a bit of speculation about why Rabbi Matondo wasn’t selected,” he said.

“I’m told he actually missed the game due to illness.”

Needed

Matondo was signed as an electric winger who has a great goal threat, but so far it’s like the switch has been off because he hasn’t really got started.

So far he’s managed just 213 minutes of action in the league with two starts, and only two appearances in the Champions League too out of a possible four.

Rangers started the season pretty well but the need for a deep squad was clear before the campaign began and being able to bring in players that are capable of winning games without seeing the overall quality of the team drop was necessary.

On paper he has done that, but on the pitch he’s yet to deliver anything.

After getting thumped at the weekend the manager needs to consider making big changes for the Champions League game against Ajax and/or Aberdeen on Saturday lunchtime and that could be the best opportunity for him to finally make a statement.
