Rangers player ratings in Old Firm showdown v Celtic

Rangers were smashed by Celtic by four goals to nil on Saturday afternoon in the first Old Firm of the Scottish Premiership season at Parkhead.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst was embarrassed as two goals from Liel Abada were joined by Jota and Ross Turnbull with little on show going the other way.

There were zero positives to really take from it for the Bears, who will have to recover quickly as they start their Champions League journey soon.

Ibrox News rated the players out of 10 below…

Jon McLaughlin – 0

The keeper could do little about Jota’s goal but both of Abada’s goals were literally straight at him, not good enough. As for the last goal, we would be happy to never see him wear that number one shirt again.

James Tavernier – 2

Embarrassing from the skipper who lacked all sort of authority and let those down around him, these are the sort of performances that need to bring apologies.

Connor Goldson – 3

At least Goldson showed some fight to get stuck in and go through his man on occasion, but that is as good as got with no real quality on show whatsoever.

James Sands – 4

Only gets a four and was one of the standouts, as he was calm on the ball and showed some composure. The lack of physicality was on show again though, as he was bullied at times far too easily.

Borna Barisic – 5

It is nice to be able to praise one thing about a player, and his deliveries into the box were top-notch. Of course, it is hard to ignore that the man on his wing scored multiple times yet again with crosses to his back post a real weakness.

Steven Davis – 3

This looked like a good decision to start with experience but the word slow came to mind instantly. Our midfield simply couldn’t deal with the pace of Celtic, and it was hard to watch David struggle so much both on and off the ball.

John Lundstram – 4

Lundstram put in challenges when he could and tried to be that man shifting possession from side to side but even this was one step too far him today, and he looked on the back foot throughout – not helped by those around him.

Glen Kamara – 4

Binned at half time but it could have been so many others, the Finland international showed many decent touches but did not offer enough in the final and defensive third in transitions.

Rangers

Ryan Kent – 3

The lack of end product is starting to become an issue now, and games like this will only push him out of the door quicker rather than making him sign a new contract – where was the standing up and being counted? Nowhere.

Malik Tillman – 0

Absolutely shocking. The American has been brilliant since arriving, but he did nothing and was swallowed up by the Old Firm game from the very first whistle. We need much more than that.

Antonio Colak – 2

It is all well and good not touching the ball much and scoring, but in huge games such as this one, you need to do more in terms of holding the ball up and linking the play. No excuses for this performance.

Substitutes: Alfredo Morelos – 2, Scott Wright – 2, Scott Arfield – 1
