Dan Plumley: Rangers will have earned more than Celtic from Champions League right now

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers...

Dan Plumley has insisted that Rangers will have earned more than Celtic for getting into the Champions League this season through the qualifiers.

The Finance Expert admitted that with two extra matches at Ibrox through qualifying, the matchday revenue will boost the total windfall above that of our rivals.

Both clubs have received the same flat fee for qualifying for the group stages of the competition and will have the chance to earn extra based on how many games they win or draw.

“There are no extra financial payments from UEFA for winning the play-offs because obviously, you are into the group stage,” he exclusively told Ibrox News.

“UEFA don’t give any prize money for the winners of the playoffs, but any additional money is linked to the extra matchdays. It was at least two at Ibrox so the money generated from that is more so than Celtic would get as you have two extra games and then the same amount of money from the group stage as a flat fee.

“There is the ability to extend it based on the number of games you win or draw, also the crowds and both of them have got good fixtures.

“Rangers will have earned a couple of extra million through the playoffs just due to matchday.”

Earned.

All of Scotland’s success in the coefficient is down to Rangers, everyone knows that.

Celtic have been embarrassed time and time again in Europe in recent years, being knocked out of all three competitions last season in what must be some kind of record.

They then somehow earned automatic qualification to the Champions League based on our success, so to see Rangers join them and now earn more money through it is brilliant.

You have to tip your hat to Giovanni van Bronckhorst, let’s hope he can bring in even more money.
