Rangers have clear run to sign free agent Ross Barkley

Rangers have a clear run to sign former Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley as Premier League clubs look elsewhere according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon.

Nixon reported via his Patreon on 29 August that the Gers were looking into a deal for the 28-year-old midfielder after securing their Champions League qualification.

It now appears they have a clear run at landing the former Everton man after Nixon’s latest comments.

Replying to a question about Rangers’ chances of landing Barkley, Nixon said (via his personal Twitter account, 1 September): “The two Prem clubs taking an interest seem to have gone elsewhere…clear run for him by the looks.”

Risky?

Isn’t a move for Barkley slightly risky from a Rangers perspective?

He was on a significant wage at Chelsea and is likely to be commanding a generous wage package should he make the move to Ibrox.

Furthermore, Aaron Ramsey’s miserable loan spell in the second half of the 2021/22 season should be a good indication to the club hierarchy that giving older players on a downward spiral a chance isn’t the best policy for the club.

Barkley hasn’t featured much in recent years and has seen his career stall badly.

Rangers

The Gers need to be giving younger players a chance to make an impact on the first team stage and filling their books with older players such as Barkley will have an impact on this.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst doesn’t even need to add another midfielder to his ranks at the moment, with Tom Lawrence proving to be a superb addition to his squad.

The attacking midfielder has weighed in with goals and has added another dynamic to the Gers going forward.

Barkley would be a marquee name at Ibrox but is a move that the Gers should stay clear of.

In other Rangers news, the manager has taken a pasting on talkSPORT ahead of what is claimed to be a heavy upcoming defeat against Celtic.
