Sky Sports journalist shares latest update on Rangers interest in Ross Barkley

Rangers are not interested in signing former England international Ross Barkley this summer, according to journalist Andrew Dickson.

The Gers were linked with a move [29 August] for the former Chelsea and Everton midfielder on 29 August, before his contract at Stamford Bridge was terminated by mutual consent making him a free agent immediately.

But despite reports linking the 28-year-old with a move to Ibrox following their qualification for the Champions League group stages, Sky Sports journalist Dickson wrote on his personal Twitter account to say his information contradicts that.

“The info I’ve heard twice in the last 24 hours is that Ross Barkley to Rangers isn’t on the agenda,” he said.

“Things can always change, of course, but all the excitement about him maybe going to Ibrox feels very premature… (Disclaimer: this probably means he’ll sign this afternoon!)”

No shock

The reported pursuit of Barkley made very little sense when it first came out anyway, and that makes this story unsurprising when you take everything into consideration.

Barkley plays either as an attacking midfielder or a central midfielder, which is arguably the position that Rangers are most well stocked in currently.

Considering the way that Aaron Ramsey’s short stint at the club went last season, it seems as though the club have learnt from their mistakes and realised that a big name signing doesn’t necessarily mean that he will upgrade the current squad.

Barkley would likely demand high wages and considering he’s barely played for the last three seasons since he moved to Chelsea, and has a poor injury record, it simply wouldn’t be a risk worth taking.

Van Bronckhorst has plenty of talent at the club already and a move for Barkley simply isn’t needed at this time so it’s good news to hear this story come out.
