Rangers defender Mateusz Zukowski wanted by Lech Posnan as he’s left out of squad

Rangers defender Mateusz Zukoswki is wanted by Polish side Lech Poznan despite only arriving at Ibrox in January, according to Tomasz Wlodarczyk.

The 20-year-old Pole has only featured once for the Gers senior side in a Scottish Cup match last year against Annan Athletic, and was entirely absent from the squad for the 4-0 win over Ross County at Ibrox on Saturday (27 August).

The reigning Polish champions are long-term admirers of the under-21 international and are looking to bring him in as the transfer window ticks down.

Polish journalist Wlodarczyk wrote on his personal Twitter account on Saturday: “Lech Poznań interested in bringing Mateusz Żukowski from Glasgow Rangers.

“The 20-year-old has been on the lists of “Kolejorz” for a long time. In the past, even before his transfer to Scotland, people thought about bringing him from Lechia.”

Forgotten man

The youngster was brought in nominally as a direct replacement for Nathan Patterson after his big-money move to Everton in the winter window.

With the Scottish Sun reporting that he cost just £500,000 the Light Blues banked a massive sum after the two deals, with Patterson costing up to £16million.

But with captain James Tavernier an ever-present in the side it has meant Zukowski has been virtually unneeded the entire time.

Letting the back-up option go is always a risky manoeuvre if the starter then goes down with injury, but should the skipper be knocked out for any length of time it would be a major set of shoes to fill either way.

Should the interest from his home land come in the form of a loan offer with a recall clause then it wouldn’t be a bad thing to let him go for game time.

Similarly if they were ready to cough up enough cash for the club to make a profit then it might convince Ross Wilson to do some business, so this one is one to keep an eye on in the final few days of the window.

In other Rangers news, there may also be a late, late incoming transfer for a player who has already turned down another offer to go to Ibrox.
