Rangers given Ianis Hagi update from Gheorge after ‘pretty serious’ injury

Rangers fans have been told to be patient with Ianis Hagi as he recovers from a “pretty serious” injury, after his father Gheorge spoke out.

Hagi ruptured his ACL in January in the first game back after the winter break and hasn’t played since, although he has returned to light training and travelled with the team on training camps.

But after manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst ruled him out until after the World Cup, his father has reiterated that Ianis will only return when he’s 100% ready and refused to put a timescale on it.

“All of the media in Romania were in a hurry and said that he will return in August or September,” he said, as quoted by The Scottish Sun [August 22]. “That he will play for the national team in September, no problem.

“The truth is he will return when he is 100% ready.

“It was not easy at all for him. He had a pretty serious injury.

“But things are going very well at the moment and when there is an opportunity for him to get back playing he will get back playing.

“We will just have to see when it will be. I can’t put a date on his return.”

Patience

Hagi was among the club’s best players and performers at the time of his injury and there was real concern about how the squad would cope without his creativity and skill.

But the manager has built a squad now that is more than capable of competing even without him, and will only get stronger once he finally returns to action.

However because of the squad that has been assembled, there is zero reason to rush him back to action prematurely and risk him getting hurt again.

The likes of Tom Lawrence, Malik Tillman, Scott Arfield and Glen Kamara are all capable of playing in his position and the team’s results have barely taken a hit since his absence was felt.

It’ll be a phenomenal boost to the club once he returns as depth and quality improve, but for now fans have the luxury of staying patient until a supremely talented player is fit enough to return and help on the trophy hunt at the business end of the season.
