Kris Commons rips into Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos for ‘brainless’ act

Kris Commons has heavily criticised Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos after the Colombian picked up a red card in the 2-2 draw against Hibernian on Saturday (20 August).

Rangers were already without a man down as they were leading 2-1. However, Morelos picked up his eighth red card since joining the Bears, leaving the club down to nine men.

Hibernian midfielder Josh Campbell scored a 93rd-min equaliser to secure a draw. Commons, the Sky Sports pundit was far from impressed with Morelos.

“But Alfredo Morelos wasn’t far behind. His red card against Hibs at Easter Road on Saturday was equally unforgivable given the circumstances,” wrote Commons for the Scottish Daily Mail (22 August, page 7).

“Rangers were already down to ten men following the dismissal of John Lundstram. They needed Morelos to dig in and do a job for them as they tried to defend a 2-1 lead.

“What they got, though, was yet another act of childish petulance from the Colombian striker — and ultimately it led to his team dropping two points.

“Anyone who thought he had matured and got rid of this side of his game would be best advised to think again. This was truly brainless stuff.”

Hard to defend

Commons is spot on here. Morelos should be the club’s most reliable option after being at the club for so long, but it seems he still can’t control his rough side.

At 26, he should be at the prime of his career – scoring goals and taking responsibilities. And yet, he often comes up with childish behaviours which are “unforgiven”. It’s really hard to defend him.

He is yet to start a game for Rangers which shows that Giovanni van Bronckhorst has doubts over his fitness. He is now an experienced player, and this is absolutely unacceptable.

Rangers

Rangers should have picked up all three points which would have given them a massive boost ahead of their crucial second leg clash against PSV Eindhoven in midweek.

Morelos could be drafted into the starting line-up against PSV, but he must make amends. If he can’t deliver in a big European game, Rangers must take a bold call over his future in the remaining days of the transfer window.

He is an asset to the club, and it’s time for him to prove once again that he is such a lethal weapon for this team.
