Ally McCoist reacts to Rangers 2-2 draw with PSV Eindhoven live on talkSPORT

Ally McCoist says the way Rangers conceded twice against PSV Eindhoven was “concerning”, but insists the tie is still open after the 2-2 draw on Tuesday.

Rangers earned an important draw at Ibrox thanks to goals from summer signings Antonio Colak and Tom Lawrence, but conceded from two set-pieces to leave them an uphill task of making the Champions League group stages this season.

Reacting to the result live on talkSPORT breakfast [August 17], McCoist admitted that the defending from set-pieces was “poor” but thanked the PSV goalkeeper for his howler from Lawrence’s free-kick.

“The place was jumping,” he said.

“Good game, good game. They’re a good team. We did well first half, they were better team second half. Good game. The tie is very open. I really enjoyed it. We got a break with the second goal and then we lost two goals at set plays. Which was poor.

“First one was a little bit, well it wasn’t a little bit, first one was fortunate. Could have gone anywhere. But the second one was a little bit concerning.

“To lose a goal like that at a set play, but we did get a break with the free-kick because their goalkeeper had an absolute… just an absolute. Fill in the appropriate word after it.”

Concern

If Rangers are to make it to the Champions League they need to be far better defensively and especially at set-pieces.

The Rangers team isn’t little by any means but they were dwarfed by PSV and it showed every time the ball got crossed into the box from a dead ball situation.

Usually the team is quite strong defensively but they looked vulnerable, and it’s something they’ll need to improve upon, but they can take great pride in how good they were offensively.

They created plenty of chances throughout the game and were unlucky to only score two, although they were incredibly fortunate to get the second when goalkeeper Benitez spilled a routine strike over the line and couldn’t recover it.

Next week Wednesday’s game will be a huge task for Rangers, but they will be encouraged by their performance at Ibrox and will be hopeful of pulling off a major upset.
