Derek Johnstone excited for Rangers v PSV

Derek Johnstone is hopeful that Rangers will defeat PSV and qualify for the Champions League group stages in the coming weeks.

The Gers will meet the Dutch giants on 16 August for the first leg of the Champions League qualification tie and the week after on 24 August for the second leg.

Johnstone believes Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s knowledge of PSV will be a huge advantage for the club in the crunch knockout tie.

Johnstone told Sky Sports News on Wednesday (10 August) while stood outside Ibrox, as shown by Football Daily: “They are a decent side, but the bonus is that Giovanni knows PSV after being there [in the Eredivisie] for a few years.

“I think there’s a chance, you can never be overconfident in games like this.

“This is a new challenge against a good Dutch side so hopefully on the day we can do it.”

Can Rangers do it?

Rangers will be looking to build from their inspirational comeback against Union Saint Gilloise, as they overcame a 2-0 deficit from the first leg.

A convincing 3-0 win at Ibrox on 9 August helped Rangers through to the next round and brought them one step closer to qualifying for the Champions League.

However, standing between them and the glorious gates of Champions League qualification is 24-time Eredivisie winners, PSV Eindhoven.

Rangers Giovanni van Bronckhorst

The Dutch giants endured a gruelling affair against French club AS Monaco winning 3-2 in extra time on 9 August and progressing to the next round after winning 4-3 on aggregate.

Van Bronckhorst, who managed Feyenoord in the Eredivisie for four years, will be well aware of the talent and quality PSV posses and will have to get his team ready for the challenge.

One thing Rangers cannot afford to do is produce a performance as poor as the one they did in the first leg against USG, and will have to be ready from the start against Ruud van Nistelrooy’s men.

In other Rangers news, PSV have already been handed a potential advantage against Rangers.
