Ally McCoist delighted by Rangers signing of Antonio Colak, thinks he can get better

Ally McCoist has praised Rangers for the summer signing of striker Antonio Colak after his goal vs Union Saint-Gilloise and expects him to get even better.

Colak scored his second goal in two games as he headed home from point blank range to help the Gers overcome a 2-0 deficit and set up a Champions League qualifier against PSV Eindhoven next week.

And talking on the talkSPORT breakfast show [August 10, 7:12am], McCoist believes that the Croatian is “different” to Alfredo Morelos, but says the team now have options in attack which is “very, very important”.

“I’m looking at Colak, I thought he was unlucky not to score in the first half with a header from a free-kick, forcing a great save,” he said. “I think he’s different.

“You’re absolutely spot on in your assessment, it’s remarkable that Rangers got to a European final last season effectively without an out-and-out centre forward. Didn’t have one. Obviously no Morelos, who came on again [vs USG] after scoring after 20 minutes against Kilmarnock.

“He will obviously get better as the season goes on, but they’ve now got options in that department which I think is very, very important.”

Options

One thing Rangers struggled for last season despite their successes was depth when key players picked up injuries, but that’s changed now.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has worked hard to bring in several players this summer and improve the overall quality of the squad and provide greater depth and competition for places.

Colak has benefitted from the fact that Morelos has had an injury early on and he’s hit the ground running with two goals in his first three appearances, but with the Colombian set to return to fitness soon he could lose his place as a starter.

But as the squad gets fitter and more in rhythm over the course of the season Colak will improve too and will no doubt pop up with more important goals.

He’s got the seal of approval from McCoist and the fans have taken to him too, so he couldn’t have wished for a better start to his Ibrox career.
