Ryan Kent faces late fitness test - Rangers early team news v Union Saint-Gilloise

Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst has confirmed that attacking pair Ryan Kent and Fashion Sakala are in the squad for Union Saint-Gilloise.

The English winger hasn’t played since picking up a problem in the opening day win over Livingston, and the Zambian attacker has yet to feature at all this season, but the manager looks like having both to call on for at least some involvement at Ibrox on Tuesday night (9 August).

After his goalscoring return to the side against Kilmarnock, key striker Alfredo Morelos is also in line to feature in the must-win Champions League qualifier.

The Dutch boss said in his pre-match press conference, via the club’s official Twitter account: “GVB: Ryan Kent is in the squad, as is Fashion Jr.

“Ryan, we will assess tomorrow and see his fitness level if he can get minutes.

“Morelos is progressing well after getting minutes at the weekend.”

All hands on deck

Trailing 2-0 from the away leg in Belgium, the Gers need all the attacking firepower they can throw at their opponents, so all eyes will now turn to Kent’s fitness in the hours before the game, hoping he can play a part.

Kent terrorises defences, and was key to numerous European nights last season, so assuming he passes his late assessment, it would be hugely beneficial to see him on the pitch in Glasgow.

Morelos’ return could not be more timely, and having found the net immediately in the league he has given himself a good chance of having a telling impact.

The damage may have already been done in the dreadful first game, but Ibrox is a different animal on a European night, and if the likes of Kent, Sakala and Morelos can be added to the side, even later in the game, it is certainly not an insurmountable mountain.

It’s a crucial game so early in the season, but an early goal would make things very interesting, so it is encouraging that the manager is counting people in rather than ruling them out.

In other Rangers news, one BBC pundit could not emphasise enough how important developments at the weekend for one player were in relation to the European game.
