Keith Jackson: Gio van Bronckhorst has too much credit to be sacked if Rangers fail v Union Saint-Gilloise

Keith Jackson has inissted that Giovanni van Bronckhorst has too much credit in the bank to be sacked if Rangers fail in the Champions League against Union Saint-Gilloise.

The Daily Record columnist admitted that the 2-0 defeat was “toe-curling” and even compared it to Graham Alexander being sacked by Motherwell last week.

Rangers welcome the Belgian side to Ibrox on Tuesday evening [09 August] looking to recover from their “shambolic” display last time out.

USG v Rangers

Writing in his latest Daily Record column, Jackson was not afraid to empty both barrels on the boss and his work on the European stage last week.

“Dangerous moments these in the managerial lifespan of Giovanni van Bronckhorst,” he wrote.

“They won’t be chasing him down Edmiston Drive with lit torches and pitchforks should he crash and burn at the first hurdle in the Champions League qualifiers.

“No, he has too much credit rolled over from last season to become the second top-flight casualty of the summer following Graham Alexander’s dismissal at Motherwell for overseeing a European collapse of similarly toe-curling proportions.

“But, even so, if the Dutchman cannot find a way of overturning a shambolic first leg performance against Union Saint-Gilloise when he gets these Belgian minnows back to Ibrox, then it will leave a major stain against his name nonetheless.”

Have a Day Off.

This would, of course, be hard to take, but even mentioning the potential sacking of Van Bronckhorst is embarrassing at every level.

Rangers are slowly transitioning at the start of this season with numerous new arrivals and a couple of big-name departures, which is always going to happen.

What happens if we did get through and then lost to either PSV Eindhoven or Monaco – two huge teams?

This is only being brought up as Union Saint-Gilloise are being disrespected, and that is something that Van Bronckhorst will certainly make sure doesn’t happen tomorrow.

Everyone knows that two goals are nothing when coming to the cauldron that is Ibrox, and an early goal for the Light Blues would turn this tie on its head.

There will be none of this talk coming from the board or dressing room ahead of the game, it is simply being thrown around for the sake of it, and we can’t wait to see that point of view embarrassed.
