Alan Rough: Rangers goalkeeper situation must be sorted out

Former Scotland goalkeeper Alan Rough has hit out at Jon McLaughlin after his mistake against Union Saint Gilloise as Rangers lost 2-0 in their Champions League qualifier first-leg.

McLaughlin was beaten by Teddy Teuma’s 27th-minute strike as the Jupiler League side head to Ibrox in the driving seat.

Rough believes that the Gers keeper should’ve done much better with the effort and has called for Rangers to address their goalkeeping situation.

Talking on PLZ Soccer Football Show (3 August, 2m34s) Rough said: “With the standard of goalkeeper that Rangers have got these are the kind of things that you’ve got to save, they’re the ones that get you through to the next round.

“Allan McGregor did it all season last year and he would’ve saved that.

“I said last week that the goalkeeping situation needs to get sorted out.

“You cannot have someone like Allan McGregor sat on the bench with the quality that he’s got.”

Big error

As much as Rangers were poor on the night and deserved nothing from the game, the two goals were extremely unfortunate.

McLaughlin has clearly made a horrendous error and the penalty decision was extremely harsh on the Gers.

Rough does have a point with McGregor being sat on the bench, the pressure is certainly on McLaughlin to perform when given the chance.

Considering the importance of this match, it was a bold decision from Giovanni van Bronckhorst and one that he needs to rectify quickly in order to give the Gers the best chance of qualifying.

Mistakes such as this simply cannot happen in big matches and this could prove to be a fatal blow to Rangers’ hopes of reaching the Champions League group stage this season.

McLaughlin isn’t solely to blame for the failure in Belgium, with their overall display far from what should be expected from them after their amazing 2021/22 season.

Nevertheless, it will be intriguing to see if the Rangers boss alters his goalkeeping plans for the return leg next week.
