Christian Burgess ‘excited’ to face Rangers at Ibrox
Union Saint-Gilloise (USG) veteran defender Christian Burgess has revealed excitement in facing Rangers at the Ibrox Stadium.
Both teams will face off in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League qualifier on Tuesday in Belgium whereas the return leg will be played on August 9.
The 30-year-old, while talking to the Daily Record, revealed that when the draw was made, Union SG players looked at the videos of the atmosphere at the Ibrox Stadium on YouTube.
“We’re all excited at the thought of playing at Ibrox,” he said. “The day after the draw was made one of the boys came into training and showed us YouTube clips of what the atmosphere was like during last season’s European campaign. It looked out of this world.
“So it’s going to be an incredible experience for us, either way. We’re just looking forward to it. The pressure won’t be on us, if we’re honest. We’re not expected to win.
“With that crowd behind Rangers we almost have sort of a free hit. But we’re all excited and especially myself.”
Rangers season started on a positive note after they managed to secure a win after coming back from a goal down against Livingstone.
That result would’ve given the Gers fans a lot of optimism going into the qualification round of the Champions League where they faltered last year.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst will know that this is his chance to impress everyone after having a solid start to his career at the Ibrox Stadium where he replaced Steven Gerrard at the bench who joined the Premier League club Aston Villa.
Ahead of the fixture, the manager has already confirmed the availability of two new signings who were struggling with injuries which would give the team a lift.
With the away-goal rule scrapped, it is important that Rangers go to Belgium and play on the front foot to ensure that they have plenty in the bank when they will play the return leg at the Ibrox.
