Rangers can trust Allan McGregor after fine display in friendly v Tottenham
Rangers gave a good account of themselves in Saturday’s (23 July) pre-season friendly at home to Tottenham Hotspur despite defeat.
Antonio Colak’s opening goal was cancelled out by a Harry Kane double as Antonio Conte’s side edged an entertaining affair at Ibrox but there was one player in particular that shone in blue.
Allan McGregor only signed his new contract with the Light Blues this summer after question marks were raised over his future at the club and in football overall given he is 40 years of age.
Against the might of Spurs’ attack, the Scotland international held his own and made a string of fine saves which impressed official club media partners Heart and Hand who said “Allan McGregor has made some great stops,” on Twitter.
Jon McLaughlin has been banging on the door of Giovanni van Bronckhorst recently to try and force his way into the Bears’ starting lineup but he just can’t budge the 40-year-old no matter what he does.
The manager could have gone searching for a new goalkeeper over the summer with McGregor unlikely to still be playing in a couple of years’ time – where have we heard that before – but he chose not to and trusted in his veteran shot-stopper.

And to be fair to McGregor, he recovered from a rough patch of form midway through last season to find his best form again as the season drew to a close and that is what he needs to continue going into the new campaign.
Rangers can keep the £23million they have received for the sale of Calvin Bassey to Ajax safely in their pockets for now and once McGregor has decided to call time on his playing career, they will have to clout to go big in the transfer market and find their new number one for the next decade.
In other Rangers news, the spending may already be over for Gers as van Bronckhorst made a transfer admission after the Spurs defeat.
