Rangers close in on deal for Liverpool defender Ben Davies
Rangers are closing in on a cash deal to sign Liverpool defender Ben Davies according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon.
The Daily Record reported on Sunday (17 July) that the Gers were set to make a move for the 26-year-old defender.
It appears that the deal has progressed with Nixon revealing (via Patreon) on Sunday (17 July) that the Gers have beaten off competition from Blackburn and Burnley and are now closing in on a move for the defender.
The two Championship clubs were looking for a loan deal for the former Preston defender and it appears Rangers’ permanent offer has proven vital in discussions with Liverpool.
Nixon said: “The auction for the defender has raged over the last few days and now the Gers have opted to buy to give them a great chance of success.
“Burnley and Blackburn both tried for Davies on loan, with Rovers pushing hard to fill one of their key vacancies.
“However the sale of Calvin Bassey has given Rangers a need and the cash to solve their problem.”
This is reassuring for Rangers fans to see a Calvin Bassey’s replacement lined up very quickly.
It is clear that the incoming transfer fee from Ajax for the 22-year-old Nigerian international has played a big part in the Gers securing a deal for the defender.
Davies looks a good option for Giovanni van Bronckhorst to add to his squad with the 26-year-old in the prime of his career.
The Liverpool defender will add quality and experience to Rangers’ back line in what will prove a shrewd piece of work from the club hierarchy.
It is also good to see the club reinvest into the squad.
So far the Gers have spent under £5million on incomings despite selling Joe Aribo to Southampton as well as Bassey’s imminent departure.
The Ibrox faithful will certainly be happier with the Gers recent business, although questions do still remain over the futures of Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos which will need to be rectified soon.
