Fabrizio Romano: Paperwork drawn up for Calvin Bassey exit from Rangers as Ajax close in on triple signing

Ajax are readying the paperwork to sign Calvin Bassey from Rangers as they close in on a triple transfer swoop, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Guardian journalist wrote on Twitter on Sunday (17 July) that Bassey, 22, is set to join Ajax in a deal worth £18.7million (€22million) plus £4.2million (€5million) in add-ons.

It is understood that Porto’s Francisco Conceição and RB Leipzig’s Brian Brobbey are also on their way to the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Best of luck, Bassey

It’s crazy to think that this time last year, we were looking ahead to the 2021/22 season expecting Borna Barisic to be Steven Gerrard’s starting left-back.

As Barisic’s performances waned, Bassey found himself to be Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s first-choice left-back before a centre-back injury crisis led to the ex-Leicester man playing in the middle of the back-four.

Bassey was instrumental in Rangers reaching the Europa League final last season, giving a good account of himself in the defeat to Frankfurt in Seville too. He was also superb in the Scottish Cup and one of our stronger performers in the league.

It’s hard to believe Bassey is only 22 because he shows maturity beyond his years in his performances and Ajax are incredibly lucky to be signing the Italy-born Nigeria international.

Rangers have done incredibly well to get the money they are getting for Bassey too as he was signed for a small six-figure sum from Leicester just a few years ago.

Next season, Bassey will be gunning for Eredivisie glory and playing in the Champions League.

He deserves this so much and everyone at Rangers is bound to wish him all the best in Amsterdam.

In other Rangers news, Ross Wilson’s scouts are blown away by this £8.4million-rated midfielder who Ibrox chiefs now want to sign.
