Ex-Rangers striker Cedric Itten reveals he had 'no chance' at Ibrox after recent exit

Swiss international Cedric Itten left Rangers this summer to return to his homeland after a difficult spell in Scotland on and off the pitch.

The striker did not score the goals that were expected of him under either Steven Gerrard or Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Young Boys came in to sign him for £1.8million.

The 25-year-old has now spoken about his time in Glasgow and why he felt like he had no chance to succeed for a variety of reasons.

“In retrospect, I would do everything the same way again,” he said, as quoted by the Daily Record. “I have had countless experiences that will benefit me for the rest of my life. Football in Scotland – it’s a different world.

“A year ago, I played a great pre-season, probably the best of my life, with goals against Real Madrid and Arsenal – but I still had no chance at Rangers. But the club communicated that to me openly and honestly.

“I went on loan to Greuther Furth, but was recalled by Giovanni van Bronckhorst and then I caught Covid and then a further virus. I’ve never been so sick as a professional. I lost five kilos. I was completely out of the team again.”

Excuses

We’ve heard it all before.

“This happens then that happens and it all gets a bit tiresome when you hear a player making nothing but excuses about why he hasn’t been up to the level that is expected by any football team.

Itten really should just swallow his pride and admit that he was not good enough for us with Alfredo Morelos in his way and Kemar Roofe and adequate backup.

His uselessness was proven on the final day of last season when he led the line in a rotated side away at Hearts and made little impact in open play and justified us selling him this summer.

With Antonio Colak coming in for the exact same price, we may have done an incredible upgrade free of charge that will relieve a lot of pressure on the Colombian and van Bronckhorst.

He can make excuses all he likes but if he was good enough, it would have worked out differently.

In other Rangers news, the favourites to win the race to sign Calvin Bassey have been named as he missed Saturday’s friendly against Blackpool.
