Rangers: Reliable journalist names favourites in race to sign Calvin Bassey

Eredivisie champions Ajax are currently favourites to sign Rangers defender Calvin Bassey, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

The 22-year-old has been linked to both the Dutch side and Premier League outfit Brighton and Hove Albion [The Telegraph] after a stellar end to the 2021-22 campaign at Ibrox.

Rangers are set to ask for a club-record transfer fee to let the Nigerian international go and Nixon has now revealed who he believes to be the front runners for his signature.

After being asked whether the Seagulls were going to take on Ajax in the chase on Twitter, Nixon replied: “Brighton are keen … but told Ajax favourites.”

Bassey made 50 appearances for the Light Blues just last season across all competitions with his most memorable game being that of the Europa League final where he almost single-handedly kept Eintracht Frankfurt to just one goal.

Inevitable

It seems like only a matter of time before the Nigerian monster leaves Ibrox for good with Amsterdam looking like his best option at the moment.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst would have obviously preferred to keep him at the club and had him to play with this season but his absence from the squad for Saturday’s friendly against Blackpool was telling.

We should at least get a huge amount of money for Bassey with Ajax to gain money from the sale of Lisandro Martinez to Manchester United and that could see a complete overhaul of the side.

It is another example of our transfer strategy paying off in a big way having only paid £230,000 for the 22-year-old from Leicester City two years ago.

We recently sold Joe Aribo for £6million to Southampton too so we need to be careful not to get rid of every top player we have at the same time but this will be a hugely profitable summer for the club regardless.

In other Rangers news, Rabbi Matondo was almost forced out of Schalke as the club detailed their stance to him before his Ibrox arrival.
