Calvin Bassey deal in 'final stages' as Rangers near major sale - Fabrizio Romano

Calvin Bassey’s Rangers exit is nearing completion with the Nigerian set to undergo his medical very soon, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The 22-year-old has been piquing the interest of the Dutch champions this summer and they have seemingly managed to win the race for his signature with a deal said to be in the final stages of completion.

Ajax are expected to announce the signings of Francisco Conceição and Brian Brobbey before Bassey is announced but everything now points towards that outcome.

“Ajax are closing on another signing: deal at final stages for Calvin Bassey from Rangers, €22m (£18.7m) fee now set to be agreed,” Romano said via his personal Twitter account.

“Bassey could undergo medical tests very soon, Ajax are on it. Francisco Conceição, Brian Brobbey and then Bassey to follow.”

Goodbye

It may have only been two years but Bassey has been the model citizen from the moment he arrived at Ibrox and we obviously wish he wasn’t leaving.

But when such an offer comes in, it is always hard to turn it down as we could do so much good with that amount of cash that his absence will hopefully not be felt by the team.

We do have John Souttar already at the club ready to take his place in defence and there are plenty of other options available to Giovanni van Bronckhorst should he need them such as Niko Katic, Jack Simpson and Filip Helander.

Teenager Leon King is also likely to feature more often alongside stalwart Connor Goldson so we shouldn’t be scrambling for a new centre-half anytime soon.

The only issue now might be at left-back where Bassey did play on a number of occasions with only Borna Barisic realised as a natural in that position in the senior team.

In other Rangers news, Cedric Itten has claimed that he had no chance to succeed at Rangers in a scolding interview after his Ibrox exit this summer.
