Rangers want Celtic record shattered for Calvin Bassey as Sky Sports share £25m development

Rangers are “relaxed” about Calvin Bassey’s future at Ibrox because they won’t accept anything less than £20million for the defender, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster reported via their Transfer Centre on Friday (15 July, 08:30am) that “one source” is suggesting “any deal may need to better the all time Scottish record of £25m when Kieran Tierney joined Arsenal from Celtic”.

Bassey is reportedly wanted by Brighton and Ajax with initial talks held over the Nigeria international.

Huge deal

Rangers have every right to hold out for as much cash as possible for Bassey.

However, they need to be careful they don’t end up rejecting big-money offers for the Italy-born Nigeria international this summer, keeping him and then being forced to sell up next year.

Bassey will enter the last year of his contract in the summer of 2023 so something needs to happen with the defender in the coming weeks or months, whether he’s sold or a new contract is sorted out.

However, as he’s 22 years old, has won pretty much all there is to win in Scotland and is wanted by clubs elsewhere, he may feel as though his time at Ibrox is up.

Ajax will be hard to turn down.

For starters, it’s Ajax. They’re one of the biggest clubs on the continent, they’re steeped in history, play regularly in Europe and are almost guaranteed to win silverware every season.

It’s likely they’ll also be able to offer him decent money.

And with Brighton, that could be seen as a gateway to a move to a bigger Premier League club for Bassey, who’d no doubt suit Graham Potter’s system well on the south coast, where he’d also earn a big pay rise.

It’s not an easy one for Rangers but if an offer of £20million does come in, it might be wise to cash in.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues have tabled an offer for a new central midfielder after a Celtic mix-up was clarified.
