Jon McLaughlin could start season as Rangers number 1 goalkeeper

Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst could be set to axe Allan McGregor as the club’s number one goalkeeper despite him signing a new one-year deal.

That’s according to The Scottish Sun [July 12], who claim that it’s understood that Jon McLaughlin could be set to begin the season in goal for the Ibrox club.

McGregor was the club’s number one last season as the club finished as runners-up in the Premiership and the Europa League, while McLaughlin was the man entrusted in the Scottish Cup as Rangers lifted the trophy for the first time since 2009.

But despite convincing the veteran goalkeeper to pen an extension instead of retiring, he could spend the next season on the bench if Van Bronckhorst follows through with his plan.

The boss confirmed he had given McGregor no guarantees over a starting place in a recent press conference.

Huge call

Whether it’s the right call or wrong call is yet to be seen, but if the boss chooses to go through with it then it will be an absolutely massive decision.

McGregor is a club legend at Ibrox and his mere presence is likely to cast a shadow over the goalmouth if he isn’t in it, but McLaughlin has earned a chance to stake a claim.

His performances last season were flawless and he’s rarely let the club down during his time here. If he can’t displace a goalkeeper who is set to turn 41 this year then will he ever be good enough?

It’s possible that the club brought McGregor back for another year to ease the transition process in case McLaughlin didn’t work out.

The call had to be made eventually, and the boss has chosen to do so now while he has the chance and fans must get behind him to ensure it’s a seamless transition.
