Rangers duo wanted in double loan swoop by Dundee, one deal nearly done

Scottish Championship side Dundee are interested in making a double loan swoop for Rangers duo Josh McPake and Ben Williamson, according to the Daily Record.

The Dee are already close to completing the signing of Williamson, 20, who has spent the past two seasons out on loan, most recently at Raith Rovers.

But Gary Bowyer likes what he sees at Auchenhowie and he fancies bringing McPake to Dens Park as well although he faces stern competition from English League One side Milton Keynes Dons.

Dundee have already loaned McPake once when he was just 17 years of age back in 2019 but he has since developed further and is interesting them again after spells in England at Harrogate, Tranmere and Morecambe.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is hoping to run the rule over McPake during pre-season to see if he is ready to play his part for the senior team which may delay any potential move for the 20-year-old.

Perfect plan

Young players need every ounce of comfort they can get and going out on loan can often disrupt their peaceful state of mind.

But if a familiar face can make the temporary switch a little less daunting and if McPake and Williamson both go to Dens Park together, they can relax in the sight of a familiar face at training and on matchdays.

McPake, in particular, is a player who is seen to have a very high ceiling in the game and Rangers want him to reach that at Ibrox but he can’t do so if he isn’t playing.

He is highly unlikely to suddenly become a regular for us this season even though Joe Aribo has been sold after Tom Lawrence was signed so he needs a whole year away at Dundee to complete his education.

Next season will be the one for McPake to finally make his break into the senior side just as his academy colleagues Alex Lowry and Leon King have done most recently.

In other Rangers news, one of the B team’s trialists is an absolute must-sign for the Light Blues after what he did to an opposition defender.
