Rangers table irresistible offer to sign Tom Lawrence as Sheffield United informed of transfer decision
Rangers have tabled a head-turning offer to sign free agent Tom Lawrence to stop him from signing for Sheffield United, according to YorkshireLive.
The English news outlet reports that Lawrence, 28, had been offered a contract by the Blades but he’s now informed the Championship club he won’t be signing for them after a move by the Scottish Cup winners.
It is understood that the Gers have tabled a “lucrative offer” for the Wales international, who’s available on a free transfer after his contract at Derby expired at the end of last season.
Get it done
On a free transfer, Lawrence would be an incredible signing.
Although he was relegated with Derby last season in the English Championship, no one should be holding that against him due to the points deduction that was bestowed upon the East Midlands club.
Wayne Rooney’s side did excellently despite their plight and Lawrence was a star player in what was a gutsy campaign by the Rams.
In 38 appearances across all competitions, Lawrence scored 11 goals and supplied five assists for Derby last season.
He also wore the captain’s armband for the Rams as he played mainly as a left-winger or as a centre-forward.
As quoted on Derby’s website on 9 February, Rooney spoke about how impressed he was with Lawrence’s attitude towards being captain at Pride Park.
He said: “Tom has been excellent and he really has led by example on the pitch.
“I know some people may have looked at the decision I made in the summer, when I made him captain, and thought it was a bit controversial – but I knew it was in Tom.
“I have known him for a long time, since he was a young lad at Manchester United, and I know how to get the best out of him.
“I think we are seeing his quality from an attacking point of view, but what sometimes goes unnoticed is the work rate and effort he is putting in during every game.”
Lawrence’s attitude has gathered some unwanted attention in the past and certain issues won’t be tolerated at Ibrox if he thinks he can rock up in Scotland and be an instant smash hit.
Many have come to the Scottish Premiership before Lawrence with that attitude and failed.
He only needs to speak to Wales teammate Aaron Ramsey to hear about that.
But we’re buzzing with this signing.
What a move by Ross Wilson.
In other Rangers news, this Bear has verbally agreed a five-year contract that’ll see him quit Ibrox for good.
