Rangers starlet Jay Hogarth signs new contract and heads out on loan

Rangers have announced that promising young goalkeeper Jay Hogarth has signed a new contract as well as sealing a loan move.

The 18-year-old starred for Rangers B last season while also regularly training with the first team towards the end of the season.

News of Hogarth’s new three-year contract was announced via Twitter on Friday evening, as well as confirming that he has joined Alloa Athletic on loan.

Last season saw him impress for the B team in the Lowland League as well as the UEFA Youth League, while he was also named on the bench for Rangers’ Europa League Round of 32 first leg against Borussia Dortmund.

Alloa Athletic represents a major step up for Hogarth, with The Wasps finishing fifth in Scottish League One last season.

A promising development

This summer has seen Rangers invest heavily in the youth setup at Ibrox.

While they did lose Rory Wilson to Aston Villa, they have brought in Zak Lovelace from Millwall who already has five professional matches under his belt.

Lovelace joins Archie Stevens, Mason Munn, Cameron Cooper and a host of others in joining Rangers Academy this summer.

Some of their other bright young stars have signed new contracts, including midfielder Cole McKinnon.

The club have also been giving youngsters increasing minutes in the first team, with Calvin Bassey and Charlie McCann all making first-team debuts shortly after joining from English clubs.

Hagarth’s new contract alongside their impressive line-up of new recruits shows how attractive Rangers now is to some of the brightest talents around.

The next step is to make sure they do not suffer a repeat of Wilson’s situation, which saw them lose arguably their best young player.

Fans should be excited by Rangers’ policy of prioritising youth this summer as it secures the long-term future of the club.

In other Rangers news, Joe Aribo is set to complete his move to Southampton inside the next 48 hours.
