Rangers starlet Ben Williamson to seal loan move away next week

Ben Williamson is due to travel to his new club this weekend where he will finalise a loan move away from Rangers the following week, according to The Sun.

The 20-year-old was subject to interest from four clubs this summer but the race has been won by Scottish Championship side Dundee where he would effectively replace former Gers player Charlie Adam in Gary Bowyer’s midfield.

Partick Thistle were the other Scottish team in the race to sign Williamson while Fleetwood Town and Hartlepool United – who also want to sign Josh McPake on loan [Northern Echo] – wanted to take the Scot to England.

This will be the Scottish Under-21 international’s fourth period of time away from Rangers so far having previously spent time at Livingston, Raith Rovers and Arbroath.

He has recently undergone surgery on a recurring injury having been left in Glasgow when the first team headed to Portugal for their pre-season training camp but is expected to be fit within plenty of time to start the season.

Best outcome

Williamson could not have hoped for a better side to come and take him on loan this season knowing that he would be highly unlikely to make the break into Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s first team.

At Dundee, he will walk straight into a team that is likely to be challenging for an immediate return to the Premiership and he can be the catalyst for them to achieve that as their midfield dynamo.

If he does go on to have a sensational season in the Scottish second tier, then he would surely return to Auchenhowie with the chance to prove himself in the Premiership for the 2023-24 season.

If not, however, then he may well find himself looking for a new club on a more permanent basis because there is no room for average at Rangers when we are challenging for honours in all competitions.

2022-23 is set to be a crucial year for Williamson’s career and he’s found himself a good place to make the best of it.
