Southampton now frontrunners to sign Rangers midfielder Joe Aribo

Southampton are now the frontrunners to sign Rangers star Joe Aribo in the ongoing transfer window, according to Daily Record.

The Nigeria international has been heavily linked with a move away from the Ibrox Stadium as he enters the final year of his contract, with Ibrox chiefs said to be facing a “huge” call.

As per the report, the Saints are now evaluating the possibility of signing Aribo this summer and their scouts monitored his performances back in December.

Southampton are not the only Premier League club showing interest in the 25-year-old as he was also attracting that from Aston Villa and Steven Gerrard in the past.

Worrying times

The development will be a cause of concern for the Rangers supporters as they would not like to lose one of their standout performers ahead of the next season.

It is a catch-22 situation for the Gers management as well as manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst who will know that he will have to sell the player — who was instrumental in the team’s success in the Europa League last season where the side finished as the runners up — if he does not agree to extend his contract or lose him for free in the summer next year.

Since then, the central midfielder has represented his current club in 148 matches across all competitions, scoring 19 times and providing 16 assists in the process [Transfermarkt].

In the previous campaign, the London-born midfielder played 57 matches for Rangers across all competitions, scoring nine times and providing 10 assists.

In other Rangers news, the club have agreed to pay a six-figure fee to Millwall for Zak Lovelace.
