Alfredo Morelos would not be big loss to Rangers if he's sold - pundit

Rangers could yet start the 2022-23 season without last season’s top scorer Alfredo Morelos but Peter Grant wouldn’t see him as a loss.

The Colombian is attracting the interest of a number of teams with Sevilla taking the keenest look at the Light Blues talisman who is open to a transfer to Spain [El Chiringuito TV].

But despite his fantastic goal-scoring ability since he arrived at Rangers, Grant is adamant that he has otherwise been a liability for the club in the biggest games.

“He was excellent against Dortmund but I thought he was a liability prior to that in league matches and cup competitions back here, the bread and butter stuff,” Grant said on the Go Radio Football Show.

“I never thought he was fit enough, there was always issues with him coming back from international duty with injuries and whatever.

“I don’t think it will be as big a loss as people think for Rangers. I watch his goals, and if someone else comes in there, and they get that quality, they’ll get more of a team player.

“Let’s remember how many trophies he’s not won in the period of time that he’s been here. He’s won one competition he’s been involved in, so you need your strikers in there all the time scoring goals, especially if they’re at Celtic or Rangers, and I don’t think he’s capable of that.”

How can anybody say that a team’s top scorer from the previous season isn’t going to be a big miss if he leaves to join a new club?

Giovanni van Bronckhorst would have loved to have been able to call upon Morelos in that Europa League final when the game was balanced so finely on a knife-edge that one goal would have swung the pendulum in our favour.

We were never going to win that game with Joe Aribo as the makeshift striker despite his goal because he could not hold the ball up like a proper striker can.

Kemar Roofe wasn’t fit either to take on the role which didn’t help which forced van Bronckhorst’s hand but he’d have much rather played the Colombian if he could.

We will find it very difficult to bring in a striker as good as Morelos this summer and for a price that we can afford which will make next season very tricky if he does leave for Seville.

In other Rangers news, the Bears have beaten off competition from Manchester City and Celtic to sign this highly-rated Scottish teenager.
