Rangers sign Cole McKinnon to new deal with player set to join Jay Hogarth on loan

Rangers have announced a new contract for Cole McKinnon with the youngster now set to leave the club on loan, according to Football Scotland.

There are a number of clubs ready to take him and while he is back in pre-season training Partick Thistle have been mooted as a likely destination for him in the upcoming season.

The 19-year-old is one of two players who the club want tied down to long-term deals before they are shipped out temporarily to gain experience.

The “extremely highly-rated” goalkeeper Jay Hogarth is the other who is due for a loan exit as he has only played in the Lowland League so far.

McKinnon made his Gers debut on the final day of the 2021/22 season, scoring the final goal in a 3-1 win over Hearts.

Hogarth, 18, is yet to make his senior debut for the club.

Planning

New deals for the two teenagers make perfect sense at this stage, especially if they aren’t yet ready to be tested properly in the first team.

Losing young talent for nothing is not something that features in a successful business model and if proposed loan moves go to plan the interest in both will likely increase.

McKinnon made a bright start to his Light Blues career in the Hearts win and big things will be expected of him, but there is currently a crowded field ahead of him at Ibrox.

With veterans Steven Davies and Scott Arfield both signing new contracts already this summer that does not yet look like thinning out a great deal.

Similarly for Hogarth, with Allan McGregor also signing on for another year he hasn’t stepped up place in the pecking order between the sticks.

Both have been regular participants in first team training under Giovanni van Bronckhorst and predecessor Steven Gerrard so should be in line for greater involvement in a year’s time.

In other Rangers news, one star man is interested in moving to be based elsewhere.
