Rangers young defender Lewis Mayo reveals Connor Goldson impact on his game

Rangers defender Lewis Mayo has credited veteran centre-back, Connor Goldson, for improving his overall game during pre-season.

Before making his loan move to Rugby Park, Mayo signed a contract extension at the Ibrox stadium, keeping him with Rangers until 2024.

Mayo was quoted in a report by Daily Record where he revealed that the influence of the centre-back has helped him grow as a player.

“At Rangers, I was lucky to be around some big names and some very good players,” he said.

“You get to test yourself against them in pre-season and in training. As a young player, it is about taking bits of information whenever you can.

“Connor was a really good one for me. Being a centre-back and playing alongside him in pre-season was so helpful.

“He would talk to me about his experiences when he was my age. He would tell me what things helped him get to where he is at.

“He would speak to me about the type of mentality that is required. When someone like Connor speaks with you it helps your confidence and builds up your belief.

One for the Future

Mayo without a doubt is going to be one of those players that Rangers fans would love to see in their future squads.

Even though he is now loaned to Kilmarnock for the next season, the fans at the Ibrox Stadium would be praying that he makes this move count in terms of his progress.

In the recently concluded season with the Partick Thistle, the 22-year-old played 33 games in the Championship, conceding only three yellow cards and being involved in two goals. He played nearly 3,000 minutes in total [Transfermarkt].

Even though he prefers to play as a defensive midfielder, the Scottish player can play as a makeshift central defender as well.

Many will question whether he will be a part of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s plan in the near future and there is no easy answer to that.

But most of it will be depending on his performances at the Rugby Park where if he lives up to the hype surrounding him, there is no reason why the fans will see him performing at the Ibrox Stadium very soon.

In other Rangers news, one of the midfielders on van Bronckhorst’s transfer radar has spoken out about his future.
